A Legacy of Service & Community: The Bay City USO Building
Built in 1942 during the height of World War II, the Bay City USO Building has stood as a cornerstone of history, community, and connection for over 80 years.
Originally developed to serve the 10,000+ soldiers stationed at Camp Hulen in Palacios, this iconic building was one of just 273 USO projects across the country—and today, it remains the only one left standing on the Texas Gulf Coast.
From its beginnings as a vibrant social hub for servicemen, to its continued use as a community center today, the USO Building has hosted thousands of events, dances, meetings, and milestones. Thanks to the vision of local leaders like Richard C. Gusman and the support of the City of Bay City and the Pierce Estate, the building was constructed with care, featuring a striking H-shaped design and international-style architecture that still impresses.
π Designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark in 1999
π Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006
π§ Underwent major renovations starting in 2013 to preserve and revitalize its legacy
Today, the Bay City USO Building continues to welcome the community, just as it did on its opening night, February 17, 1942—complete with a grand piano purchased through donations from local citizens.
